With the release of ChatGPT, it became clear that AI was real, here to stay, and would transform everything. But did that include group benefits? The group benefits industry has historically been slow to adopt new technology, often relying on outdated software and error-ridden manual workflows. At ThreeFlow, we resolved to help our broker and carrier customers become first-class citizens in this new era of technology.

This year, we focused on reinventing our renewal and new business RFP submission experience:

  • We launched our quoting API, which allows carriers to receive opportunities and submit proposals directly via API.
  • We also introduced attach renewals, enabling carriers to email their renewals to our system—leveraging technology to mirror an existing workflow.
  • And now we’re adding AI-powered solutions to the mix.

Introducing smart proposals and smart renewals

With smart proposals and smart renewals, carriers can upload renewal letters or proposal documents to quickly generate, edit, and submit AI-populated quotes to brokers. It’s like magic. Here’s how we make it happen:

Carrier quoting and rating systems generate PDFs. These can be a pain for brokers or carriers to transcribe into a spreadsheet or our platform. Our technology finds and extracts rates, rate guarantees, and plan design information. Because insurance documents are complicated and vary by region and carrier, we engineered a precise solution that adds ThreeFlow expertise on top of AI. With hundreds of cumulative years of industry expertise and years spent processing documents, we know where to look and how to interpret these very specialized docs.

We go a step further by augmenting the proposal. Ask any broker, and they’ll tell you that carrier proposal documents often omit plan design provisions that are very useful for brokers. Smart proposals supplements the extracted information with pre-loaded carrier defaults. The carrier teams set these defaults, representing the default provisions that apply to all proposals unless stated otherwise in a proposal document. This results in comprehensive proposal submissions that help brokers with their analysis and help carriers more fully represent themselves—a win-win.

Once the document is processed, carriers can view, edit, and submit their responses to brokers. The result? Carriers and brokers are saved from the burden of data entry and can spend more time focusing on tasks that add value.

What’s Next

Brokers and carriers continue to be at the center of how we design and build products. As the industry enters another busy season, we're excited that our customers will benefit from these new solutions. We’re looking forward to insights from our users to inform where we should go next with AI.
